What Is Estate Administration Tax?

In Ontario, when someone dies, their estate is taxable.  This tax is referred to as the Estate Administration Tax and it is due upon applying for a Certificate of Appointment of Estate Trustee from the Superior Court of Justice.

When Do I Have To Pay This Tax?

How Is the Estate Administration Tax Calculated?

The government calculates the Estate Administration Tax using a specific formula.  Any estate valued at over $50,000 is taxed at $15 for every $1000.  The formula also rounds up to the next $1000 so a $50,001 estate for example, would be calculated as $51,000.
